...The first from Spencer, who didn’t so much find a hole but make one in the centre of the field and then run nearly half the pitch to score.

...With a number of individuals not able to attend the club’s Family day on May 9th, Paul took the opportunity to make the player of the season award during the post match celebrations. This year there were several contenders, but the unanimous view was that the award should go to Matt the Viking: in the first half of the season he virtually made the defence shield his own (though Ibbi worked hard to keep him on his toes) and as the season progressed Matt’s game matured and he became an effective attacking force too, making it easier for the rest of the side to play on the front foot.

U13s four try comeback scuppered in last minute

Warlingham had Quins on the back foot during the early stages, and quickly took advantage of missed tackles and uncommitted play with a try within the first few minutes of the match.

...The second half was dominated by Harlequins, and the team demonstrated great resilience and determination with two further tries, one by Mohammed and the game equalising try and conversion by hooker Ruairi Van Raalte.

...Toby Butler was once again omnipotent at fly-half and caused the visitors misery throughout the match; James Royale’s defensive skills have come a long way, and today rose to the occasion in the marking of “Bulldozer”, a boy twice his side, delivering fierce and effective tackles; Van Raalte’s kicking skills have been fine-tuned throughout the season (thanks to the Quins’ “dedicated” kicking coach) and for one conversion attempt hit the post with a tight angle kick that even Dan Carter would have found challenging; lock Justin Foster had a great return to the team and was a nuisance at every lineout and breakdown.

...Many consider the U13s age to be a transition season – getting to grips with new laws, a full pitch and 15-a-side rugby, however the squad has coped well and finished the season on a high (regardless of the narrow loss today).

Oxfordshire Festival - Under 11s report

We have also had to endure the savage disappointment of being losing finalists and the thrill of being “A” and “B” Plate champions last season.

...To be mixing it with the top teams in the county, many of whom have been playing together with few changes in personnel since they were 6, is no mean achievement.

...Eight unanswered tries were scored in the second half; a hat trick of tries from fly half Toby Butler, four from number 8 Isa Mohammed and a further one from Van Raalte finalised a very successful day for the Quins U13s and a record score line for the season.

...Unsung match heroes include prop Joe Dyer, who gets better and more determined as the season develops; Baxter Branson, who was causing the opposition serious problems; prop Joe Bussell, who has regained his form after a considerable lay-off and challenged every one of the front row battles.

...The backs warmed up as the match progressed, and while some weren’t on the “official” score sheet, brilliant tackles, stylish ball handling and all-round “team play” by Matthew Henderson, Joe Taylor, Henry Gordon and Seb Wood all made a significant and noteworthy contribution to this victory.

...Play of the game (if not the tournament) goes to Thomas whose positional play was excellent allowing him to take a long pass from James A and cut inside for a try.

...Next up were Henley b1's in a hard fought match where we were denied a couple of clear tries by a confused ref - we went down 7-6

Unfortunately all did not go to plan as they then lost to Woodcote, a very large well drilled side.

Only the group winners progressed through to the knock out stages so Harlequins U15s had to settle with watching the final.

Woodcote went on to hammer Buckingham out of sight so on balance Harlequins were easily the second strongest team on the day.

...There were many notable performances on the day: fly half Toby Butler not only proved he can run with the ball in hand, but also found the energy to cover the entire pitch at key times, making some brilliant try saving tackles. ... Other key performances include James Royle (always in support & some great bone-crushing tackles), Harry Groves (putting the fear of god into boy-men three times his size), Ruairí Van Raalte (leading the pack & proving his ability to strip the ball regardless of the number of opposite players in the maul), Joe Dyer (an outstanding performance overall, an attribute to his fitness work over the season), Lawrence Newport (increasing his intensity with every match & scoring a hard earned skilful try) and Ross Cook (who demonstrated great natural talent in the second row).
