...The M&Js section at Marston Ferry has been self sufficient both financially and operationally for a number of years, enjoying its independence and physical location to provide excellent quality in its coaching, develop its own unique look and feel and deliver outstanding rugby to young people in Oxford.

...This season has seen the first full Oxford Harlequins 'graduates' in Joey Todd, Harry Burn and George Primett, all playing for Oxford Harlequins First XV having started out at Marston Ferry as Under 6 players many years ago. This is a testament to the success and continuity that exists in the Oxford Harlequins M&Js set-up at Marston Ferry - how rugby is delivered to young people at Marston Ferry, how the club operates and feels or how players feed from the M&Js up to the colts and senior sides at North Hinksey will not be compromised by any acceptable merger.

However in order to accommodate their schedules we are going to have to present the awards at the start of the day and move the parents tag matches back to 1.00pm.

...Tom Varndell was invited by Glen Chapman following a Twitter flirtation (well done Glen!): Tom played for both Chinnor and Henley Hawks as a child and was a Tigers Academy Player from age 15.

...He joined Wasps in 2002 but this will his last season in green and yellow as it has been announced that he will be moving on in the summer.

Last chance to hand in your Sainsbury Active Kids vouchers

Please remember to bring any Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers to the End of Season Awards - its our last chance to collect them.

...Our boys battled valiantly (not giving up is one of their real strengths) to make a score of their own, with some good breaks, but couldn't quite get through the Richmond defence ...and so the match ended 10-0 to Richmond. Whilst it was slightly disappointing to end the season with a loss, the overriding feeling was one of pride since the boys had played another match to a high standard and shown themselves more than capable of competing with one of the London clubs....

...Finally, at the post match barbecue many of the boys also enjoyed the opportunity to have their photo taken with the ever obliging Lawrence Dallaglio (who was in the role of one of the Dad's on tour with the U9s) ...which helped make the whole day a very suitable finale!

U9s: half and half against Richmond and Oxford

If the prospect of playing against Richmond wasn't enough, then there was the added spice of another match against Oxford RFC B team - against whom the Harlequins Bs had played a really closely contested 3-3 draw at the Oxfordshire Festival recently.

...One of these parents was the former England number 8 Lawrence Dallaglio, who spent most of the day being hassled for autographs & photos by many of the Harlequins kids, dads, (and, I have to report, mums...) and managed it all with great humour and patience.

...In the first match against Richmond we were on the back foot for much of the first half, and went two tries down by the break, with one of these being an interception.

...In the second match against Oxford, we found if difficult to contain a well-organised team who have a couple of really destructive runners who were very strong on the break.

End of Season message

For whatever reasons, maybe the six week break in December and January waiting first for the snow to melt and then for the melt water to seep away or perhaps Easter falling very late this year and the effect that had on school holidays and subsequent Festival dates and fixtures, a number of coaches and parents have felt the season was longer than most and expressed relief when the end finally hove into view. In fact, the season has been the same length as any other give or take a weekend, but nonetheless perceptions are peoples’ realities and the club would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to all players, supporters (be they parents, responsible adults, grand parents or friends) and coaches for the sustained effort that goes into getting to the right place at the right time whatever the weather and doing the right thing when they get there.

...Whether it is touring Brecon as U9s or the West Country as U13s, watching England beat Wales in the Six Nations in the club house on a dark and cold February evening, winning 13 out of 15 games in the season as U14s, coming away with a Bowl from the St George’s day Tag Tournament at Twickenham as U8s or just playing and enjoying being part of something worthwhile, it is the result of everyones’ commitment and energy to support rugby at whatever level they feel comfortable with.

...At this point I offer a special message to parents and other supporters: when you think that watching youngsters playing rugby for nearly two hours on a Sunday morning seems interminable, don’t forget that the cricket season is just starting and those two hours will just about get the first innings out of the way (if you’re lucky).
